THE LEAD48 GLOBAL RELAY 2027
One question. Around the clock.
LEAD48 opens in Toronto at 9:00 a.m. on 20 May. The baton follows the sun through two orbits: eight regional realities listen, then the world connects what they found. Regions overlap, one after another, on one continuous stream. Movements overlap as daylight moves. At 3:00 p.m. Toronto time, North America hands the baton to Latin America and the Caribbean, where it is 4:00 p.m. in São Paulo.
48 hours. Eight regional realities. One evolving question. Orbit 1 (T+00 to T+24) carries the regional inquiry as daylight moves; Orbit 2 (T+24 to T+47) connects what the regions found; the question returns to Toronto in the final hour. Regions overlap deliberately: a movement does not have to end before the next begins, and every wave of the relay can be seen in your own timezone, below. The handover itself is content: both regions are live together on the one stream while the baton passes. Because the relay runs around the clock, some regions hold the baton outside their usual working day. After the eighth region, the baton returns to Toronto for a ceremonial close: a moment, not a ninth region.
THE BATON'S ROUTE
Eight regions. One continuous clock.
One world. One direction. One baton. The baton follows the sun.
The baton leaves North America, passes to Latin America and the Caribbean, then travels west with the sun: across the Pacific to Australia, then East and Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, before returning to Toronto for a ceremonial close. The order follows daylight, not convenience, so the later regions hold the baton while Toronto sleeps. Each card is a wave of the clock: which regions are live in it, and when.

From 2:15 p.m. Toronto, North America states what it received, what its reality changed, what remains unresolved and what it passes forward.
Both regions are live together on the one stream. The baton changes hands at the handover point.
From 4:00 p.m. São Paulo, the first 20 minutes take up that question with North America still on.

THE SHAPE OF EVERY MOVEMENT
Seven beats in every movement.
Every movement follows the same seven beats, in the same order. The timings are those of North America's opening programme; other movements set their own lengths. The shape is shared so the relay stays one conversation; what fills it is each region's own.
THE MOVEMENT SPINEReceive→Frame→Examine→Respond→Synthesize→Transform→Pass
- Baton Handover In
The incoming and outgoing regions are both live. Intellectual content, not an emcee transition.
Receive - Opening Regional Provocation
One strong regional voice frames the movement: what is happening in this region right now, and why should the rest of the world care?
Frame - Regional Reality
The evidence: what is actually true in this region.
Examine - Responses, Experiments and Tensions
The practical core: what is being tried, and where it is contested.
Respond - Regional Synthesis
What we learned, what challenged our assumptions and where we disagreed.
Synthesize - Baton Question + Handover Out
The signature moment. The baton never simply moves: it evolves.
Transform · Pass
On the homepage this is the 30-second version: receive, understand, challenge, respond, transform, pass. The full Baton Protocol, including what every region must document, is on the conversation architecture.
THE ENTIRE 48 HOURS
Seven waves. Every handover named.
Three waves carry the regional inquiry through the first 24 hours, three connect what the regions found over the next 23, and the final hour brings the question home to Toronto, exactly 48 hours after the relay opened.
HOW A HANDOVER WORKS
No cold handoffs. No double broadcast.
There is one stream, and movements overlap as daylight moves. The handover is intellectual content, not an emcee transition, so both regions are on it together.
- OUTGOINGBaton Question + Handover Out
The outgoing region states what it received, what its reality changed, what remains unresolved and what it passes forward. The next region joins live.
- THE HANDOVER POINTThe baton changes hands
The question moves on. Nobody has to leave the conversation for it to move, and nobody has to wait for a handover to join it.
- INCOMINGBaton Handover In
Both regions stay live while the incoming region takes up the question, the change, the tension and the question passed forward.
- INCOMINGThe new movement is under way
The Opening Regional Provocation begins, and contributors from the outgoing region can stay in the conversation.
WHAT THE RELAY IS EXPLORING
Twelve themes, drawn from every region.
Each inquiry theme draws on the regions or the Global Convergence that examine it. Contributors start from a theme, wherever they live. A Next-Gen voice runs through the relay.
The full map: every theme, where it is explored and the research behind it.
Independence: LEAD48 is independently organized. Its use of UN and UNESCO frameworks does not imply affiliation or endorsement.
THE PROGRAMME
One clock, from Toronto back to Toronto.
The 48 hours: 20–22 May 2027; one continuous stream; two orbits of one continuous 48-hour clock, with overlapping regional movements in the order shown, closing with a ceremonial return to Toronto; the same seven beats in every movement; live handovers. One world. One direction. One baton. The baton follows the sun.
Opening: Toronto, 9:00 a.m. EDT on 20 May.
